Call for good leadership

Source: Highlands Post, Post Courier, November 16, 2011

THE majority of rural Papua New Guineans will continue to suffer from inadequate or lack of basic health, education and agriculture extension services, road transport and other vital infrastructure unless there is good leadership in all levels of Government.
This is the message that Western Highlands Governor Tom Olga stressed to more than 3000 people of Nebilyer when he dished out almost K1 million to fund access roads and health and education services and help churches and community groups at Pabrabuk last Friday.
“Good leadership at the ward, council, district, provincial and national level is the key to ensuring that important basic services and infrastructure are provided for the people.” Mr Olga said.
“Corruption does not happen at the national leadership only. It occurs at all levels of Government and the people will continue to suffer because of bad leadership.”
Mr Olga officially opened a four kilometre Pabrabuk-Iriwapa access road that will extend to West Kambia and open up what has been a less developed area populated by more than 60,000 people in the border area of Western Highlands and Southern Highlands provinces.
The access road was funded by local MP Benjamin Poponawa at a cost of K1 million from his DSIP funds and built by a local company.
Governor Olga gave K500,000 for work to continue on this important access road.
The Western Highlands leader also committed K250,000 to Pabrabuk Secondary School and K86,000 to the people for their labour in helping to clear the road.
Mr Olga gave a total of K936,000 to fund important infrastructure projects and social services in Nebilyer.
Also present for the occasion were President for Nebilyer RLLG and Chairman for Culture and Tourism Tony Wek, former Nebilyer MP Thomas Nekints, local businessman and Chairman of the Provincial Lands Transport Board Joe Moka, councillors, chiefs, pastors and other local leaders
