THE National Alliance party has sacked 12 parliamentarians including Speaker Jeffery Nape, Don Polye, Sam Abal, Paul Tiensten and Patrick Tammur for conduct prejudicial to the interest of the party.
It has also suspended nine others pending their appeal against the charge.
A letter sent to the Registrar of Political Parties and Candidates, Sir Kina Bona, said the MPs were no longer members of the National Alliance party and they had the
right to appeal against the decision with the party’s national executive council.
The letter to Sir Kina and copied to Parliament Clerk Don Pandan also said the remaining members of the party “will conduct a meeting to appoint an acting parliamentary leader as soon as possible after the determination by the Supreme Court on the future of party leader Sir Michael”.
The sackings and suspensions are over the overthrow of the party by the government and the dismissal of its parliamentary leader Sir Michael Somare.
It is the first time the NA party has taken a stern disciplinary action on its parliamentarians. The rift between the MPs and the party executives led to the demise of the Somare-led government.
Those confirmed as being expelled from the party are: Nape (Sinasina-Yongomugl), Polye (Kandep), John Luke (Milne Bay), Charles Abel (Alotau), Mathew Poia (Goilala), David Arore (Ijivitari), Pitom Bombom (Kerema), Sali Subam (South Fly)
and Andrew Mald
(Moresby Northeast).
Others who were expelled for “causing frustration among party members” that led to the events of August 2 are Abal (Wabag),  Tiensten (Pomio) and Tammur (Kokopo).
Abal was sacked because as acting prime minister, he had sacked Polye as a minister against the party’s advice and also rallied support outside the party’s constitution to claim the Highlands deputy leadership.
Tiensten and Tammur were sacked for “causing frustration among party members” on the K125 million loan from Nasfund for the Kokopo district and the K10 million given to businessman Eremas Wartoto to buy an aircraft.
Members who were suspended for two months are: Ano Pala (Rigo), Alphonse Moroi (Central), Leo Dion (East New Britain), Michael Sapau (Manus), Mark Maipakai (Kikori), Lucas Dekena (Gumine), Sai Beseo (Kainantu), James Gau (Raicoast) and Buka Malai (Madang). They are suspended as members from Oct 1 to Nov 30.
Members of the National Alliance party council were not spared, with Douglas Tomuriesa sacked as member of the party and member of the council.
Suspended for their part in splitting the party are John Tuka (New Guinea Islands), James Kond (Highlands), Charles Synell and James Tiberame.
