Digicel aids Engan school

THE Digicel PNG Foundation has continued its rollout of double classrooms throughout the country and the Kaiamates Primary School in Enga is the latest to benefit.
The primary school classroom project funded by Digicel Foundation is the third for the province.
Funded at a cost of K200,000, the steel kit structure double classroom includes an office space, 40 new double school benches, school black boards, a water tank, two pit toilets and two bucket showers for the female students.
Kaiamates Primary School is an hour’s drive from Wapenamanda town and was established in 2000 as a Government Elementary school before it was handed over to the Four Square church.
Since then it has been recently upgraded to a Primary School by the Enga Provincial Education Board.
It is the largest school in the area with a total of 430 students with up to eight classes and eight dedicated teaching staff.
It currently has two bush material double classrooms and three permanent double classrooms.
The bush material classrooms and a permanent classroom with two pit toilets as well as four semi permanent teachers’ houses were all built through community contributions both in labor and kind and also with the Education subsidy.
Ten years ago mining company Placer Dome funded the two permanent classrooms but apart from that they had no other external support.
Digicel Foundation chief executive officer Marina van der Vlies said: “The Kaiamates community have shown that they are independent as they have provided free labour and given other donations in kind to assist in building bush material and permanent classrooms for their school and this demonstrates that they are organised and are committed to ensuring their children receive basic education.
“We support and work with communities like Kaiamates by providing them with better resources which will help them develop to become even stronger communities for the future.”
