AGRICULTURE is the ideal sector capable of capturing the goals aligned in the Vision 2050, Agriculture Minister Sir Puka Temu says.
He said more opportunities existed within the sector and the industry could become a thriving force of the economy.
He said to achieve that, Papua New Guinea had to strengthen and build capacity among relevant agencies in the sector.
Sir Puka said to achieve better outcomes, drastic changes needed to be made.
“We cannot keep doing the same thing over and over.
“I am encouraged by the collaboration among  the Coffee Industry Corporation, Cocoa Coconut Institute, National Agriculture Research Institute, Fresh Produce Development Agency, Oil Palm Industry Corporation and Oil Palm Research Association.
“This inter-industries dialogue and collaboration is necessary for exchange of ideas and novel ways of doing things for the benefit of the rural smallholder farmers,” he said.
He said the sector could achieve the goals aligned in the country’s national plans, including the Medium Term Development Plan (MTDP) and the Vision 2050.
Sir Puka said the sector was ready to align itself with innovative processes to be one step ahead of other developing countries.
Sir Puka commended the efforts of the PNG-Australia Agriculture Research and Development Support Facility (ARDSF) for contributing significantly towards institutional strengthening and capacity-building among selected agriculture research and extension organisations named.
ARDSF has been most successful in transforming the agriculture resource sector to align strategic plans and programmes linking science and research to deliver development outcomes that matter at the people level, particularly small-holder farmers and rural households.
